ACLU on Obama's non-veto

White House Backs Away from Defense Bill Veto Threat
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
December 14, 2011

WASHINGTON – The White House today announced that it will support passage of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), which contains harmful provisions that some legislators have said could authorize the U.S. military to pick up and imprison without charge or trial civilians, including American citizens, anywhere in the world. The final version of the NDAA was agreed to earlier this week by House and Senate conferees.

Though Obama administration had threatened to veto a previous version of the bill based on these provisions, it has reversed its position. The House is expected to pass the bill tonight and Senate will vote soon after.

“The president should more carefully consider the consequences of allowing this bill to become law,” Laura W. Murphy, director of the ACLU Washington Legislative Office. “If President Obama signs this bill, it will damage both his legacy and American’s reputation for upholding the rule of law. The last time Congress passed indefinite detention legislation was during the McCarthy era and President Truman had the courage to veto that bill. We hope that the president will consider the long view of history before codifying indefinite detention without charge or trial.”

  1. GG this reminds me of the bailout: the fearful Congress acts out of fear of protestors? or what: how come no one is OUTRAGED
Wall Street had to have twisted arms and the question is why would THEY ruin the constitution?

  2. Like Carl Levin said, the White House told Congress to include the language in 1031.

It was always clear that Obama threatened to veto the bill because his administration felt the bill was limiting their power in other areas. They were never against the ability to arrest US citizens without charging them with anything, because based on their actions, having a secret panel that puts together a "kill list" for the President, it would be safe to assume that they already believed they could do that.

They don't want the White House to have to answer to anyone else about anything it wants to do.

  3. If this bill passes, you can mark my words: Marshall Law will follow my fellow Americans. If President Obama signs this Bill, DO NOT VOTE FOR HIM AGAIN!

  4. I am voting for Ron Paul - He is probably the only candidate with the honesty and integrity to reverse the criminal activity in the White House now --

  6. whilst ron paul may be on the right side of something like this, he's far more interested in feeding business interests, and pandering to the religious right, than individual civil liberties... This makes me upset though, because there are a number of Obama's supporters who won't vote for him, because of this, when most of the republican contenders would do far worse.

  7. I want Ralph Nader for President. He has been walking the walk for the common man and woman for years. He has supported OWS ideals before the current movement took place.

And please, Ralph Nader is not the reason that Bush Jr. was elected in 2008. Ignorant voters and the Supreme Court handed that to W.

  8. You guys aren't looking @ the real picture ...
U.S. Lives are at stake ... and the threat is a real one.. Most people who comment badly have no military experience!!!
Terrorist are bombing countries all over the world... Most of the Acts of aggression are from citizens that turned terrorist from secular terrorist cells.. The only way to confront the Citizen/Terror is to either go Hard or go home to rubble and death.. 2nd Yes it looks like a civil rights invasion but in reality they will only hold persons of extreme interest .. The bill will most likely be changed and adapted to a point where it will be more definitive ,, it's better to be safe than DEAD !!!
